Cuckoo Clock Geissenpeterhof VdS Clock of the Year 2009

Model number: 5.8878.01.P

This is the official VdS clock of the year 2009!

Every year, the Verein – die Schwarzwalduhr (VdS) organizes a competition to choose the most beautiful clock of the year. This year, the clocks were chosen at the Speyer Museum of Technology. The models of the Black Forest cuckoo clock manufacturers were on display there from June to November. Visitors to the museum voted for the most beautiful clock of the year. This is the winning clock for 2009.
Everything that makes a Black Forest clock beautiful can be found on this very large clock. The focus of this clock is on the particularly rich decoration of the clock and the depiction of traditional activities on a Black Forest farm. The clock shows a farmer harvesting hay, here resting on his scythe during a break. Next to him is the already filled hay cart.On the right-hand side of the clock in the courtyard in front of the small chapel is a shingle goat (unfortunately difficult to recognize in the pictures). In winter, when there was no work to be done in the fields, the farmers often spent their time making roof shingles. This activity enabled the farmers to work and earn money even in winter.
The construction of the clock is very unusual for a Cuckoo Clock. In contrast to normal clocks, the characteristic outbuildings of a Black Forest farm were realized as independent buildings in this clock. They are not just indicated as usual, but stand freely next to the main part of the clock, the Black Forest farm. There is a small farm chapel on the right-hand side. Remote farms in the Black Forest in particular often had their own chapel, as the path to the nearest village church was often too far and often covered in deep snow in winter. There is a small barn on the left-hand side; such outbuildings were used as storage rooms or smokehouses, depending on what space was needed. This actually gives the impression of a real farm ensemble with all its typical elements. The clock is named after the little boy on the left in front of the barn. He is carrying a small goat in his arms…
In addition to the clock’s structural features, it has a typical shingle roof and the main house is of half-timbered construction. The fire bell on the roof is characteristic of the often isolated courtyards. In an emergency, this bell can be used to call for help quickly.
Another characteristic feature of such a farm is the many animals, including domestic animals such as dogs and cats, but also farm animals such as cows. In addition to the animals, this clock is very elaborately decorated with working tools and floor decorations, many trees, a water trough and benches. There is a small table in front of the clock, fully set with a snack.
All figures and decorative elements are made of wood and hand-painted.
High-quality dancing figures (dancing couple in Black Forest costume) made of wood, wooden dial, wooden hands, wooden cuckoo, wooden pendulum.
