Every year, the competition organized by the Verein – die Schwarzwalduhr (VdS) takes place to choose the most beautiful clock of the year. At the Black Forest Museum Vogtsbauernhöfe in Gutach in the Black Forest, all Black Forest cuckoo clock manufacturers put their clocks up for election. Visitors to the museum vote for the most beautiful clock of the year. This is the winning clock for 2008.
This very large clock features everything that makes up the beauty of a Black Forest farm. The clock’s construction is true to the details of a Black Forest farmhouse, with a typical shingle roof and partly half-timbered construction. The fire bell on the roof is characteristic of the often isolated farms. In an emergency, this bell can be used to call for help quickly. The small pond next to the clock serves the same purpose. It symbolizes the fire ponds that are always found near a Black Forest farm. What at first glance appears to be ornamental actually has vital functions for a Black Forest farm.
Another characteristic of such a farm are the many animals – be they farm animals such as cows, pigs, chickens, geese or pets such as dogs and cats. All of them are represented on this clock. There are also wild animals such as a duck. The wealth of detail on this clock is immense – there is always something new to discover. In addition to the animals, this clock is very elaborately decorated with working tools and floor decorations, many trees, a water trough and benches. The central eye-catcher of the decoration is the child figure on the bench in the middle. All figures and decorative elements are made of wood.
