August Schwer Schwarzwälder Uhrenfabrik is an owner-managed family business founded in 1885 and based in Schönwald in the heart of the Black Forest.
Here in Schönwald, a picturesque village in the Black Forest, the world’s first Cuckoo Clock was built by Franz Ketterer in 1737. In doing so, he invented one of the most famous traditional German products, still known the world over to this day. Hardly any other piece of craftsmanship has remained true to its original design to such an extent over the centuries, while retaining its worldwide popularity.
The August Schwer Schwarzwälder Uhrenfabrik: Clock production takes place in the rear part of the building, a carpentry workshop is located in the basement of the building. To the front is a showroom and a factory outlet.
The August Schwer Black Forest clock factory is known for its reputation as a fine manufacturer of high-quality and highly detailed cuckoo clocks. Several award-winning watches underpin this claim. With 18 official awards since 2004 from the VdS (Verein die Schwarzwalduhr) as Clock of the Year 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2022. There are also four 2nd places (silver medals) and five 3rd places (bronze medals). This makes the August Schwer company by far the most award-winning cuckoo clock manufacturer in the Black Forest.
