Apostle jug, salt glaze, with heavy ornamental lid

The first relief jugs with an apostle motif were made in a similar way around 1620.

The relief motif running around the jug shows the individual holy apostles.

This jug was produced in the 1970s by a family business in Höhr-Grenzhausen, the Girmscheid company.

Handarbeit, Girmscheid” was carved into the bottom of the jug.

The jug was generally decorated in so-called “Rustica” colors (i.e. matt). However, the apostles and some ornaments were emphasized by additional overglaze painting.

A unique, heavy but finely modeled jug.

The lid and the thumb rest were also made on site from pure pewter and cast on by hand.
