Product information “Painted wedding jug 1/2 l cobalt painted with bridal couple lid”

The Loreley is an approx. 130-metre high slate rock located on the inside of a bend in the Rhine near St. Goarshause. The name probably comes from the old Rhenish dialect “lureln” (to hum) and the Celtic “Ley” rock. The strong current of the Rhine and a small waterfall created a humming sound. This sound, combined with the echo of the slate rock, gave this place its name. Around 200 years ago, Heinrich Heine composed a poem based on the fairy tale by Clemens Brentano. The fairy tale in verse tells the story of a beautiful girl who, sitting on the Loreley rock, combs her golden hair. The sight of her and her singing beguiled the sailors so much that they no longer paid attention to the dangers of the river and wrecked on the rock. This jug shows the young beauty looking down into the Rhine valley in deep relief. The first lines of the Heinrich Heine poem are engraved on the opposite side of the jug. Made in old craftsmanship in so-called “gray-blue”, this is an approx. 26 cm tall jug. Capacity: approx. 3/4 liter. Limited to 2,500 pieces worldwide, the jugs are numbered consecutively and come with a certificate of authenticity. The lid made of pure pewter crowns this piece of German craftsmanship.
